18 Days Gorilla Trekking Safari

18 Days Gorilla trekking safari adventure to Rwanda Uganda and DR Congo. This Safari starts from Rwanda crossing to Congo via the Cyangugu boarder to Bukavu and trek low land gorillas in Kahuzi Biega national park and later cross to Uganda to visit gorillas in Bwindi NP and wildlife viewing. This safari can end from any country depending on client’s convenience.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Pick Up – City Tour – Volcanoes National Park
On arrival at the Airport, you will be welcomed by our company representative who will brief you shortly about your Rwanda Safari. After the briefing you will have a Kigali city tour to the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Ground, the handicrafts shops, the museum, later have luch and transferred to Volcanoes national park in Ruhengeri. This is a 3 hours drive from the city center. Upon arrival, you will check in into your lodge and then take a short community tour around Musanze for a good cultural experience of a true Rwandan culture. Dinner and overnight stay at Kinigi Guest House (Budget)/Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge (Mid range)/ Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Luxury)

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla tracking
After breakfast, you will transfer to the Park headquarters at 7:00am for a briefing from the ORTPN Ranger guides. After this, you will be accompanied by your ranger guide and start your trek into the forest to search for the habituated Mountain Gorilla family allocated to your group. You are reminded to bring with you packed lunch and bottled Mineral water. In terms of clothes, trekking boots, long sleeved shirts and blouses, rain coats, and Cameras are highly recommended for the trek. The time you will spend in the forest searching for the Gorillas is not predictable as it depends on where they spend the last night. Once you come across the Gorillas, all the troubles you have gone through to reach them will be easily forgotten and instead utilize the1 hour you have with them to get a great experience. You can observe them in terms of behaviors as well as taking photographs. Return to the lodge for refreshments, dinner and overnight stay at Kinigi Guest House (Budget)/Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge (Mid range)/ Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Luxury)

Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking/Dian Fosse’s grave
After breakfast, you will go for the trekking of the Golden Monkeys in the Virunga forest. Alternatively, you can trek the Dian Fossey’s grave and also visit her research center at Karisoke where you will learn a lot about her work in the area. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Kinigi Guest House (Budget)/Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge (Mid range)/ Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Luxury)

Day 4: Transfer to Gisenyi town
After breakfast, you will leave Ruhengeri and proceed to Gisenyi town which is located on the shores of Lake Kivu which is the main fresh water body in Rwanda. Upon arrival, have lunch and after you can take an optional boat ride on the lake to the closest islands to discover unspoiled places and sceneries. The ride will also offer you beautiful views of the Nyiragongo Volcano in Congo which is the only still active volcano in East Africa having last erupted in 2002 and is also popular for its fluid lava (Lava Lake). Alternatively, you can relax on the beach as you wait for your dinner and overnight stay at L. Kivu Serena Hotel (Luxury) / Malahide Hotel (Mid range) Stipp Hotel (Budget)

Day 5: Cross over to Bukavu in Congo
This day cross over to DR Congo in preparation for the next day’s lowland gorilla trekking. It takes less than 2 hours to cross over to Bukavu town. This day you may visit the museum at Bukavu and other interesting places at Lake Kivu with a boat cruise to Idjwi Island. Overnight stay Orchides Mbayo / Coco Horizon

Day 6: Gorilla trekking
After an early breakfast at your hotel, head out to Tshivanga Visitor Centre for briefing about the condust during your gorilla trek. Then penetrate the in the guidance of armed game rangers following the well attended to trails. In the forest you will be allowed at least an hour in the presence of the lowland gorillas. Return to the lodge for relaxation and later return to Kigali for your dinner and Overnight.

Day 7: Transfer to Uganda and then to Lake Bunyonyi
After breakfast, you will cross the Rwanda- Uganda Border and transfer to Lake Bunyonyi. The journey will offer you with sights of the beautiful terrain of the rolling hills with terraced landscape of the Kigezi sub region. Upon arrival at Bunyonyi, have lunch and later carry out an afternoon boat ride on the lake which will reward you with sights of different birds on the many small islands on this lake. It was upon this great bird population that the lake was named Bunyonyi which means many small birds. L. Bunyonyi was formed as a result of the volcanic lava blocking the river at the present day Muko, forming a wide dam. The lake is the deepest in Uganda and 2nd in Africa. Day 8: Transfer to Bwindi NP
After breakfast, you will transfer to Bwindi via the Kabale region commonly known as the Switzerland of Africa. Upon reaching Bwindi, have lunch and then spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at your lodge while preparing for your gorilla trek the next morning, or go for an optional evening walk to the local community of the Bakiga to explore how they make their local brew, traditional dances, and their general lifestyle. Day 9: Gorilla tracking in Uganda
After breakfast, you will be led to the park headquarters for briefing and at around 8.00 am local time, in the company of porters and others gorilla trackers, you will follow the trails in the forest as you search for these gentle giants. The time spent to encounter them as you hike through muddy terrain, is unpredictable, albeit it usually takes between 2 to 8 hours. Meeting them is the most exciting wildlife experience. You are free to stay in their presence for at least an hour.
Return to the lodge for relaxation. If you still feel energetic enough, an evening community walk is highly rewarding. You will have an opportunity to participate in local beer brewing and the Batwa (Pygmies) cultural performances. Overnight stay at Gorilla Forest Camp / Buhoma Lodge (Meal Plan: Full Board)

Day 10: Bwindi to Queen Elizabeth national Park
In the morning, wake up for a pleasant breakfast and then transfer to Ishasha for viewing tree climbing lions on your way to Queen Elizabeth national Park. Arrive early enough for your lunch at Mweya Safari Lodge before moving up to the afternoon boat cruise along kazinga Channel that connects lakes George and Edward. Day 11: Wildlife Safari – Queen Elizabeth national Park
At 5.00 am rise up for a cup of coffee before undertaking a game drive that will reward you with great wildlife encounters. At this time early risers including nocturnal and predators are retreating to their hide-outs after a night feasting on the smaller mammals including the numerous antelopes in the grasslands. Return to the lodge for a heavy breakfast as you prepare for an afternoon chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura gorge or a nature in the Maramagambo tropical rainforest. Day 12: transfer to kibale Forest national park
Undertake another game drive in the northern sector of the park – the Kasenyi track in search for lions and different antelope species. Later proceed to Fort Portal. Enjoy a nature walk as you visit cultural sites including stalagmites – “Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru”, crater lakes, and if time allows, the Royal Palace and meet the king of Toro or his palace officials for folk tales and the cultural values of the kingdom of the Batooro people. Day 13: Chimpanzee Trekking
After a morning breakfast, transfer to Kibale – Kanyanchu park headquarters for briefing from the principal park warden and later undertake chimpanzee tracking. This activity normally takes at least 2 hours. You return for lunch and in the afternoon embark on a nature walk in Bigodi wetland for tracking various monkey species and excellent birding. Overnight stay at Mountains Of the Moon Hotel / Primates Lodge / Ndali Lodge ( Meal Plan: Lunch & dinner)

Day 14: Transfer to Semilik National Park
Early Breakfast and transfer to Semliki National park, enjoy a game drive and a walk to Sempiya Hot springs. Return to Fort portal in the evening for dinner and overnight at Mountains of the moon hotel.

Day 15: Semliki to Murchison Falls national park
Spend this day on a long drive to Murchison Falls national via Hoima and the Great Western Rift Valley. If you never took with you packed lunch, then you may make a stop-over in Masindi for lunch and then proceed to the park. Overnight stay at Paraa Safari Lodge / Sambiya River Lodge

Day 16: Game viewing and Boat cruise to the bottom of the falls
Wake up early for breakfast and embark on a game drive in search for early raisers and predators returning to their hide outs. Expect to view wildlife such as; Elephants, Buffaloes, Giraffes, African Lion, Leopard, Jackson’s hartebeest, Uganda Kob, lions, waterbuck, buffalos, oribi, and baboons moving through the lovely savanna grasses among others. Return to the lodge for lunch and later head for a launch trip on the river Nile. Late evening return to Paraa safari Lodge.

Day 17: Chimp Tracking in Budongo Forest – Kampala
Have morning breakfast, after which head to Budongo forest for chimp trekking. See our closest relatives (800 chimps population) and see what you can learn from them. There are also other primates such as the vervet monkeys, blue and red tailed monkey, potto, black and white colobus and baboons. Later set off to Kampala driving through Hoima. Arrive late evening for overnight at your hotel in kampala

Day 18: Departure
Enriched with an experience of a lifetime and unforgettable memories you will say goodbye to the Pearl of Africa. Depending on the time of departure you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back home. We are looking forward to seeing you again!
